If you're planning to give birth in the hospital, make sure that you and your doctor are in agreement about when you want to leave home. You don't want to arrive at the hospital too soon, in the best case you will spend long hours in the hospital room with nothing to do, in the worst case the hospital will turn you away. There is no set rule on when to head to the hospital. You should always follow your instincts and your doctor’s advise. Here are few guidelines that can help you make decision. Head for the hospital when contractions are:
1. four minutes apart or less;
2. lasting for 60 seconds or longer;
3. occurring consistently for one hour or longer;
4. so painful that you cannot talk during them;
5. or if you instinctively feel that it's time to go.
If this is your second, third child or subsequent child, the labor usually progress more quickly.
