Not long after I mentioned that UpToDate finally released their Palm version (I had promptly requested my copy after I posted the news here) did FedEx deliver the package (it took less than a week). It comes in a DVD so you need a DVD reader in your PC for installation as well as an SD card reader. If you want to install all the options, then you’ll need about 1.1 Gb SD space free. I have 1.26 Gb free in my SD card so that was not an issue. Without images, the space requirement is about 900Mb. With SD cards up to 8Gb in size (which the Treo 680 supports and with a bit of clever hacking, the Treo 650 and 700 should support too) space definitely is not a problem.
The instructions said to preferably format the card for faster installation (after a backup of course) but I did not bother. Installation went smoothly anyway and didn’t seem to take longer than the installation for my PPC. The set up routine places a special Installation PRC in your Launcher directory so it will usually auto install (or if it doesn’t you can manually run it from the Card folder). You do not need to have the Palm Desktop installed in the same PC.
I am pleased to report that the PRC only occupies about 200 Kb of Ram so that’s very lightweight indeed, compared with the PPC version. The program loads fast and overall feels more sprightly than the PPC version (as are most things Palm)
You’ll see the familiar default search screen:
You could switch to the Table of contents view. The Menu also gives you options to change the font size as well as to select a default Adult or Pediatric view. Nice touch.
The results of the usual UpToDate search gives you a list of topics, and by tapping on the list you drill down to the details. Note that I say “tapping”. Unfortunately, the application does not fully support the Treo’s Dpad navigation so you can’t use the Dpad controls to jump to the next link or the navigation buttons.
The font in the detailed view is rather small but from the menu you can change the font size and layout. There is an option for “Optimised mode” and “Wide Page Mode” which I presume is for bigger screen devices like the TX and Lifedrive. It made no difference on the Treo650.
Images appear sharp but unfortunately the text in the images with tables are tiny. There is no option to zoom in for larger view of images or tables. (the same problem exists for the PPC version)
Like it’s big brother Desktop version, UpToDate for Palm gives you a full drug reference provided by Lexi-Comp. The Interface is different though and once again requires tapping on your part as the Treo’s Dpad is not fully supported.
Verdict: A commendable effort from UpToDate. Painless installation provided you have the required hardware - particularly a DVD drive, enough space on a large capacity SD card and a card reader. My main criticism is the lack of complete Dpad support - that makes it a two-handed application so you don’t have the Treo’s famous one-handed ease of use here. This is a must-have application if you are an UpToDate and Palm user. One less reason to leave my Dell Axim behind. Woohoo!
